Tongues and the Natural Mind
For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. (1 Cor. 14:14)
The New York Times recently published an article on a neuroscientific study on Speaking in Tongues. The article scientifically affirms what the Word already says about tongues. Man is a triune being made up of spirit, soul, and body. (1 Thess. 5:23). Since the natural mind comprises part of the soul, it is “unfruitful” when tongues are spoken because they are spoken by the spirit. One interesting note about the study is that it found that believers who speak in tongues are more emotionally stable than those who do not. I find that to be true in my own experience.
