A Double-Dog Dare: Hoppin’ at iHop

In more than a few places in the Gospels, Jesus speaks of doing things in secret so as not to be seen by men.  While ministers speak a lot on giving, they rarely speak of giving anonymously.

One of the things that my wife and I have a blast doing is paying for someone’s bill at iHop.  When we travel to Gospel meetings, we usually hang out at iHops because they serve egg whites and wheat toast (we do what we can to stick to our ordinary eating habits).  All kinds of folks go to iHops - ministers, teenagers, homeless folks, old folks, and even Aryan Nation racists.  We’ve made it a fun habit to spy out someone who looks like he could use a pep or little surprise in his life and tell the waitress that we’ll pay the bill.  Once we commit, we quickly pay the bill and leave so that our “victim” will never, ever know just who paid his bill.

This Sunday do the same thing - pay someone’s bill or leave a tip that is larger than the bill itself.  Believe me, it’ll do you more good than it will anyone else.

That is a great idea. So sneaky, and clever. I like it!

I love giving in secret way more than in public. At first, it was hard for me, but the more I do it, the more I enjoy it!

    Thanks for the idea.
